Message from Georgie
Whilst my amazing son Harry created HelpHarryHelpOthers back in 2009 we have recently celebrated the end of our first year as Harry’s own registered charity. This combined with Christmas being just around the corner it is with great pleasure that we send our first newsletter out to all our amazing supporters to say a huge ‘Thank you’ and to wish you all a very Merry Christmas.
Since Harry’s passing & then making the decision to become a registered charity I have been incredibly touched by everyone who has supported us so that one day we can make Harrys dream become a reality and ensure no other family goes through the Cancer Journey. Harry’s great work continues for one reason only – for the benefit of those who still have ‘hope’. 2 years on the hurt after losing Harry is as raw as ever and I hate the thought of others going through the same. Only we can stop this.
Whether you are a volunteer, a fundraiser, a bracelet maker or a business that supports us your selfless support means the absolute world to us. Whilst I create the vision and run the charity with the support of my team, trustees and ambassadors, Harry’s work cannot continue without your invaluable, selfless support.
I hope that as you read on you can see just how much of an impact YOUR efforts are making to those going through some sort of Cancer journey. I wanted Harrys charity to be as visual as possible and from being a fundraiser myself for 3 years with Harry I appreciate how important a ‘thank you’ is and more importantly how good it is to see where they money goes that you help raise.

YOU'V HELPED US HELP OTHERS!!!!
Thanks to your amazing support we have been able to raise over £660,000 in the last 12 months. This amazing amount has allowed us to fund a brand new build of a family centre at St Mary’s hospice, and to support medical research projects suffering shortfalls in funding.
More than anything though… you have helped us help so many families as they face their cancer battles. From petrol for hospital visits to food vouchers, heating to bills, weddings to funerals…(and even dog boarding!)…your support has meant that more families can face their hardship knowing they are not alone. That however hard the journey is there someone standing alongside them….to find out more click here.
HELP COPE
When you are on your cancer journey you face a colossal shift in your lifestyle. Ill health to yourself or caring for a loved one often means that work has to take second place. But just as your household income drops though, bills are going up! Not for medical treatment so much, but for the knock on effects that cancer brings.
Travelling to and from a hospital several days a week adds to the petrol bill, parking all day in paying hospital car parks, having to eat hospital canteen food all mean that just getting to hospital for treatment or being by a loved one’s side can become £100’s a week.
But even when you get home the story is the same…travelling for check-ups, travelling to pick up prescriptions….having the heating cranked up to keep people warm and safe, new clothes if they are having steroid treatment, new bed linen or mass washes if they are poorly because of chemotherapy, making your home accessible to those who are poorly…all these apparently “small costs” when you add them up quickly become 10’s of £1000s…just as your income has been cut.
Bills mount up…landlords and banks come knocking…and all too quickly just being able to survive is the battle….not the battle to beat cancer! IT SHOULDN’T BE THIS WAY! With your help now we can help support families, freeing them from these added pressures so that they can focus on caring for one another, on being a family, on being strong…and on being able to smile once again.
HELP CARE
With your support we have been able to offer financial support and backing to local hospices and palliative care facilities funding refurbishments and new equipment. The biggest of these has been a grant of £103,000 to St Mary’s Hospice to build the new “Harry Moseley Family Centre” due for completion in early 2014.
Traditionally when your loved one went to a hospice you would visit during the day and bed down on armchairs or spare beds for the night. But what if there was other family at home? What if you had to go back of an evening to care for others, to feed other children, to tend to your parents…what if your loved one sadly passed away overnight…you would just receive a phone call to tell you the news.
NOW BECAUSE OF YOUR HELP families can be together and to say goodbye. We are building a brand new family centre which will allow all the family to “move in” together, in a home-style setting, living, cooking, and just being together as a family…so rather than a phone call when it’s too late, loved ones can now be together.
HELP CURE
Thanks to the incredible support of Professor Andrew Peet we have now established an incredible advisory board of research specialists. They have guided us in our funding of projects specifically targeted at finding the cure to Brain cancer.
With the end of the financial funding year fast approaching several fantastic projects have found themselves with a shortfall in funding to allow them to be able to complete their mission. HelpHarryHelpOthers has stepped in with funding to get them through so that they can complete their research.
The aim for 2014 is that with support from you and from our advisory panel to begin fully funding projects designed to beat this vicious cancer that now kills more children and people under the age of 40 than any other cancer.
To date Brain Tumour research has been far and away the least funded of Cancer research projects, but we want to change that. We want to make sure no one else like Harry has to be lost, that no other mother has to lose their son, no brother or sister their sibling and no friend lose their companion.
WITH YOUR HELP WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!!
VOLUNTEERS
The selfless people that give up their time and stand in all weathers and support us at all sorts of events. As a small team of 3 there is only so much ‘Harrylove’ we can spread. We appreciate your invaluable support as its you guys that help keep the money coming in and also help spread that awareness.
Thank you so much for becoming Harry volunteers. Over the next few weeks we are looking for volunteers to help out at a few events we have coming up. Such as every weekend and the week leading up to Christmas we are looking for some elves to help out at Santa’s Grotto at the House of Fraser. On the 21st December we are having a bucket collection down at St Andrew’s and will be in need of around 20 volunteers to help us. Into the New Year we need volunteers for events such as Supermarket days, wedding fairs and a corporate event.
If you are interested in helping with any of these events please email enquiries@hhho.org.uk for further details.
Bracelet Makers
I would like to thank every single volunteer that has helped to make bracelets for Help Harry Help Others, without each one of you we would never be able to keep up with the demands that we do. Just think every bracelet you make is worth £1 to our charity and every single £ or penny helps sick families.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank 2 very special ladies who have helped our charity so much. The first one being Ellen Nunn who has been helping to make bracelets for many years now. Many thousands of bracelets have passed through her fingers! She can often be found sitting in Harry HQ making bracelets including Wedding favors and special orders. The second lady would be Sandra Timms who has made 12,211 bracelets between September ’13 and November ’13 and is always willing to jump in and make extra bracelets if we need them in a hurry.
If you would like to become a volunteer to help make bracelets or help out at any future events please email enquiries@hhho.org.uk
